As Mutual of Omaha’s VP of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), Laura Zahn is an expert at interpreting numbers, but it’s her love for reading that has called her to serve her community. She’s found a way to blend her professional talents and this passion by serving on the board of the Milwaukee Public Library Foundation (MPLF).
Working remotely from Milwaukee, Zahn leads the Expense Solutions team, which manages our corporate expense processes including budgeting, variance analysis and expense allocations. She also manages the finance side of Mutual of Omaha’s corporate incentive plans.
“In my role, I’m responsible for setting the overall vision and strategy for the Expense Solutions team, effectively communicating that vision and plan across the enterprise and building the Expense Solutions team,” she said.
During a recent interview, Zahn shared insights about her volunteer role and how giving back can help support personal growth.
How do you feel connected to the MPLF’s mission?
Zahn: The foundation’s mission is to provide essential support for things like books, materials and facilities — all of the things that aren’t covered by the base operating budget of the library. For example, we sponsor important initiatives like the summer reading program and the excellent makerspaces at the various library branches. These programs are critical to maximizing the value of the library for everyone in our community, which is about so much more than books.
I’ve been a lifelong reader and library lover. I grew up in a house that was walking distance to the library, so I often found myself at the library, especially on hot days during summer breaks! I eventually landed an internship at the library and then an official role as a book shelver. I have fond memories from my time at the library. When I learned about the opportunity to volunteer and support the library in Milwaukee, I knew it would be a great fit.
Two of my top five Gallup strengths are learner and input. I can never get enough information and reading is one way I satisfy my desire for continuous learning. Another Gallup strength of mine is achiever. Checking off the list for the library’s summer reading challenges was something I truly enjoyed as a child. I still enjoy reading, but with an almost 3-year-old I’m reading a lot more picture books.
What does your board service entail?
Zahn: I currently serve as board treasurer for the MPLF. This role involves oversight for the MPLF financials including reviewing monthly financial results, supporting our annual audit, running the finance committee and participating in board events, such as meetings and fundraisers. My favorite part about my role is working with other like-minded individuals toward a common goal of supporting the library. Our mission is important to me and I’m proud to contribute by bringing my unique set of skills.
How does your experience at Mutual help you in your role as board treasurer?
Zahn: At Mutual I’m part of the FP&A team, where we focus on enabling effective decision-making. The skills I use in that role are skills I also use as MPLF treasurer. I help other board members and MPLF management better understand our financial results to guide us towards smart decision-making.
How has your board service played a role in your development as a leader at Mutual of Omaha?
Zahn: In my board position I get to wear many hats, which helps me understand the big picture. I can use that mindset to think about how the Expense Solutions team is part of a bigger whole, which helps us maximize the value we bring to Mutual of Omaha.
How has Mutual of Omaha supported you in your board service?
Zahn: Mutual of Omaha provides me great flexibility in managing my schedule, which includes a lot more than working! I’m able to design my schedule so that I can be present and effective at work, while also being able to do other things that are important to me, like supporting my family and engaging in board service.
What advice would you give to other associates wanting to serve on a board?
Zahn: You’d be surprised how many organizations are looking for individuals to volunteer, including on boards. Find organizations you’re passionate about and connect with current board members. You could do this through a LinkedIn message or by attending one of the organization’s events and introducing yourself. Ask questions about their board service and express your interest in getting involved. They’ll remember you when a board spot opens in the future.
